Some of the most inspiring design moments happen in the places people least expect: those awkward corners, tight transitions, and forgotten pockets of the home. This newly completed under stairs wine storage project is a perfect example of how thoughtful, bespoke design can turn an overlooked space into something not only purposeful, but deeply atmospheric and beautifully crafted.
Located just off the kitchen, this project shows how even the most challenging footprint can become an elegant extension of the home’s entertaining space.
As homeowners increasingly look for ways to maximise space, formerly awkward or “dead” areas: utility corners, lofts, and now, under stairs voids have become opportunities for creativity and practicality.
Bespoke design plays a central role in making these transformations possible. Tailored cabinetry allows us to work with unusual geometry, hidden angles, and tight footprints, ensuring the final result feels intentional rather than forced. This project is a testament to that.
Painted in our new Hazelwood shade, the cabinetry has a deep, earthy richness that feels both contemporary and timeless. The oak interiors create a warm visual contrast, adding depth and tactility to the design. Together, the tones capture that moody, atmospheric quality now trending across home bars, wine rooms, and intimate entertaining spaces.
These richer palettes: layered browns, warm neutrals, oaks, and darker stained woods can feel grounding and cocooning, especially in smaller architectural pockets like this one.

Every project comes with its challenges, and this was no exception. The angled footprint under the stairs demanded a tailored approach.
With a height that shifts from low to high, it naturally lends itself to mixed storage that accommodates various bottle types. To achieve the right balance of practicality and visual rhythm, the design includes a combination of wine bins, display shelving, and bottle slots, each placed to maximise both height and accessibility. Diamond-format racks make the most of taller areas, while the single bottle slots introduce a more refined, organised aesthetic.
When designing wine storage, it’s essential to consider the types of bottles you plan to store. Champagne bottles, for example, are noticeably larger than a standard 70cl bottle of red, so planning ensures your display works both visually and functionally.

As home entertaining continues to grow, from relaxed evenings with friends to weekend gatherings, dedicated wine storage has become more than a convenience; it’s a lifestyle feature.
Positioned just off the kitchen, this under stairs space extends the home’s entertaining flow. It keeps bottles accessible without interrupting the primary cooking or dining areas, acting almost as a mini wine room or satellite bar.
“It really demonstrates the flexibility of bespoke design,” notes our team. “You can include everything you’d want in a modern home without it ever feeling cramped or over-styled.”
What was once an awkward, angular void is now a standout feature of the home, warm, moody, highly functional, and beautifully aligned with the way people live today.
