The kitchen that looks after you

Charlotte Stirling-Reed, also known as the baby & child nutritionist @sr_nutrition, is someone who really does live in her kitchen.

At work, she gives parents confidence about what and how to feed their little ones, while at home, she’s mum to two young children, so needed an open plan kitchen that lets her work and play with ease.

The brief from Charlotte Stirling-Reed

The kitchen that looks after you should do two things: it should make everyday life easier through clever design in the layout, storage, pathways, and appliances in the kitchen; and it should make you feel good just by virtue of spending time there.

Starting with the blank canvas of a new extension, our Senior Designer, Cris Sega, was particularly mindful of the importance of the kitchen layout and making it feel functional both for Charlotte’s work and for her young family.

Charlotte’s priorities in her kitchen were an open-plan layout, a large kitchen island, and extensive storage. All of these would help make cooking for her family, as well as for her followers, more accessible.

Charlotte has a wonderful family, and I was lucky enough to meet her husband and children and talk through the best layout for them as a young family. The aim was to create a kitchen where they could all relax, switch off, and eat together – a space that works just as well for family life as it does for Charlotte’s work.

The Tom Howley collaboration

As Cris was starting from a completely blank slate, he could create a layout that worked best for a young family – in this case, rows of storage cabinetry against the walls, and a large island in the centre acting as the heart of the kitchen.

Immediately, Charlotte was drawn to our deep green Avocado paint, so we used this colour for the statement island where she cooks, works, and spends quality time with her children, while keeping the cabinetry in a soft, natural oak finish.

She also expressed a preference for drawers over cupboards for ingredient and appliance storage, so we incorporated this into the design, alongside a larder pantry with adjustable shelving and automatic sensor lights, so the space is flexible and it’s easy to see everything in stock at a glance.

As well as being a space to work and to unwind with her family, Charlotte is passionate about getting her kids involved in the kitchen, so creating a space that made cooking accessible and enjoyable for little hands was a must. The large island means plenty of space to help out, while maximising storage lower down gives them special spaces where they can keep their own cups, cutlery, plates, breakfasts, and snacks.

My advice to clients who want to create a kitchen that can offer more to their family is to start the conversation with a kitchen designer at a very early stage, and get the whole family involved in the discussion. You might be surprised by how much input a child can have – and how much fun it can be. There will always be that lovely moment of, ‘That was my recommendation’ or ‘I suggested that!’

Making home life work better

The result of this collaboration is a kitchen doesn’t just tick all the family’s practical boxes.

It’s a kitchen that looks beautiful, feels like home, and makes connecting as a family that bit easier in the face of busy family life.

It’s a kitchen that looks after them all, every single day.

The working kitchen

As a nutritionist – particularly one who shares a huge amount of her work online and on social media – the kitchen plays an enormous role in Charlotte’s work.

It was important for the kitchen to look beautiful, as it plays such a strong supporting role in so much of the content she shares online. There are multiple spaces that can serve as a backdrop when filming, depending on the type and style of content she is working on at any one time. However, it’s also practical and functional for the demands of a food content creator’s day to day shoots. For example, access to utensils and key ingredients like herbs and spices has been made quick and simple so even when they’re being used multiple times a day, reaching for them feels frictionless.

Family time in a busy home

For Charlotte and her family, a kitchen that works well for family life is one where they can be together, whatever they’re doing. The open plan layout and versatile island space makes joint work and parallel activities simple, and means there is enough space for the whole family, even when everyone is busy!

I think family meals are achievable in modern life, but I honestly, hand on heart, think it is a lot, lot harder. It’s really tricky to make sure we’re all together eating around the table, and in reality, it doesn’t always happen.

But when you can sit as a family and enjoy mealtimes together, I think it’s so important to try and make it happen. It really can make a difference to your relationship with your kids and your family, but also the food environment for kids and how much they enjoy those mealtimes.

A special space for a home cook

As well as fulfilling all these vital roles in Charlotte’s life, the kitchen is a space where she can indulge in one of the things she loves most – cooking.

Her passion for child nutrition started out as a passion for food and cooking, and that hasn’t gone away even as it’s become her career.

My favourite time in the kitchen genuinely when the kids have gone to bed and I have the kitchen to myself. Sometimes I’ll have the TV on in the background or play some music that I can listen to, and I’ll prep some food in the quiet, maybe with a glass of wine. That calmness when everything else has stopped is honestly something I really, really enjoy.
